Tone District is a guitar shop in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire. We sell new and pre-owned electric, acoustic and bass guitars, amplifiers, effects and the parts and accessories that keep them working, and we run a workshop on site.

You are welcome to come and play. Everything on the wall is plugged in and available to try, and nobody will hover while you do it.

The showroom

The showroom is at 20 Victoria Springs, Holmfirth HD9 2NB. It is open Monday to Saturday, 10:00 to 17:00. If those hours do not work, ring +44 7454 755958 and we will arrange a time outside them.

Holmfirth sits in the Holme Valley, about eight miles south of Huddersfield on the A6024, and is straightforward to reach from Huddersfield, Barnsley, Wakefield, Sheffield and Manchester over the Woodhead. Parking is on the street outside.

Because we are a small shop, ringing ahead is worth it if you are travelling for something specific. We can have the instrument out, tuned and set up on a stand for when you arrive, and we can put an amp with it that suits how you actually play.

What we stock

Electric guitars — solidbody, semi-hollow and hollow, from first instruments through to boutique and custom shop pieces.

Acoustic guitars — steel-string and electro-acoustic in the full range of body sizes, from parlour and concert up to dreadnought and jumbo, plus classical and nylon-string.

Bass guitars — four, five and six string, short scale and full scale, active and passive.

Amplifiers — valve, solid state and modelling, from practice amps through to gigging combos and heads, for guitar, bass and acoustic.

Effects — overdrive and distortion, delay and reverb, modulation, compression, wah, multi-effects, power supplies and switching.

Parts and accessories — strings, picks, cables, capos, straps and straplocks, tuners, cases and gig bags, stands and hangers, pickups, care products and spares.

Pre-owned — a rotating selection of used guitars, basses, amps and pedals, every one of them serviced and set up in our workshop before it goes on sale.

Every instrument is set up before you get it

Guitars are wood, glue and steel under tension. They move with heat and humidity, and a guitar that left a factory months ago and crossed the world in a box is almost never playing the way it should when it arrives.

So every instrument we sell goes through the workshop first. We check and adjust the neck relief, set the action, cut and dress the nut slots where they need it, set intonation, check the frets, adjust pickup heights, fit fresh strings and play it. If something needs more than an adjustment, it does not go on the wall.

If you buy in the showroom, tell us how you like it and we will set it to that before you take it home. If you buy online, tell us in the order notes.

The workshop

The workshop is on site and it is open to everyone, not just customers.

• Fret levelling, recrowning and polishing; fret replacement
• Nut and saddle cutting and replacement
• Pickup, pot, switch and jack replacement, and rewiring
• Bridge, tremolo and hardware work
• Electronics fault-finding and repair
• Structural repairs, headstock breaks and crack work
• Servicing on trade-in and pre-owned stock

Bring the instrument in during opening hours and we will look at it with you at the bench, tell you what it needs and what it does not, and quote before any work starts. Nothing gets done that you have not agreed to.]

Trade in what you are not playing

We buy and part-exchange guitars, basses, amps and pedals. Bring it in for a valuation while you wait, or send us details and photos and we will give you an indication before you travel. The value comes off whatever you are buying, or we can buy it outright.
